What to do now — 7 immediate steps

Follow these steps in order for the best protection

01

Stay calm and act fast

DIRECT

Panic doesn't help. Take a deep breath. Every minute counts, but hasty decisions make things worse. Read all steps first.

02

Disconnect from the internet

DIRECT

Disconnect your device from wifi and mobile data. This prevents further data theft and the spread of malware to other devices.

03

Change your passwords

DIRECT

Start with your email password (most critical), then banking, then other accounts. Use a different, secure device if possible.

04

Enable two-factor authentication

Enable 2FA on all critical accounts: email, banking, social media. This prevents attackers from logging in again, even if they know your password.

05

Contact your bank

If your banking details were stolen or if there are suspicious transactions, immediately call your bank (number on the back of your bank card).

06

Scan for malware

Run a full virus scan with Malwarebytes (free) or Windows Defender. Remove all found threats.

07

File a report

File a report with the police (online or at the station) and report to your national cybersecurity authority.
